PASTOR’S DESK
Every once in a while, some visitor to our parish asks why the Carmelite priests pray to the Virgin Mary at the end of Mass by saying the Hail Holy Queen, Hail Mary or some other Marian prayer.
The answer is because of the long standing practice of The Order of Carmelites, from around 1250, where the Carmelites became the first religious community dedicated to the Virgin Mary. They soon adopted the practice of reciting the Salve Regina (Hail Holy Queen) or Regina Caeli (O Queen of Heaven) during the Easter Season. In recent times, our Prior General in Rome has urged us to continue this devotion to Mary by reciting some Marian prayer at the end of Mass. This practice is usually only done by members of the Carmelite community, but other religious orders do this also.
Go now, and know that the spirit of Jesus will be watching over you. Go now, and enjoy God’s summer gifts of warm sun, cooling waters, and long, light days. Go now, with the gift of faith, that you might see God’s hand in all your work and play. Go now, with gift of hope that you may know God’s guidance, which is keeping you safe. Go now, with the gift of love, that you might offer kindness and care of all you meet. Go now, with the gift of knowledge, remembering all that you have learned. With God’s help try to live it. Go now, with these words of Jesus in your hearts and minds: “I will not leave you, I am with you always.” Amen.

PARISH NURSE MINISTRY
Hurricane Season – It is impossible to live in Florida and not be aware that the hurricane season has begun. It is important to put the possibility of a storm strike into perspective and prepare ahead of the actual threat. Precautions should be taken to protect personal safety and health needs. It is important to consider the health implication due to prolonged isolation and lack of services that result from a major storm.
Medical preparations include obtaining at least a two-week supply of all medications. Pharmacies and mail order service will most likely be unavailable immediately after a storm. Insulin, blood pressure medications, heart medications, breathing aids (nebulizers, inhalers, and oxygen supply) must be arranged in advance of the storm. People who do not require regular medications should also prepare by having first aid supplies on hand. Anyone with mobility or self-care issues should make arrangements for a reserved placement in a shelter. Be a good neighbor and make sure the elderly and homebound n your neighborhood have prepared as well.
The most obvious health issue is to protect you and your family from harm. Glass and flying objects are the cause of severe injuries. Follow the codes set by the county, take advantage of hurricane preparation booklets available at local supermarkets and in newspapers. Clean, potable water is a major issue; one gallon per person per day for a period of at least 72 hours and up to two weeks is recommended. The food supply must be carefully planned to avoid dependence on refrigeration; canned meats and fish, fruits, vegetables, soups, powdered milk, peanut butter and jelly, vegetable and fruit juices. Don’t forget the manual can opener.
Handling of garbage is another issue to consider. Store a large supply of plastic bags to allow for double bagging of all garbage. Remember insect repellant and disinfectant to spray the cans and control the odor. Precautions and preparation can make a difficult situation easier to control and survive.
For more information, visit www.myflorida.com, www.doh.state.fl.us, or www.floridadisaster.org.
Contact the Parish Nurse Office at 561-392-3719 with any questions or healthcare concerns.
As hurricane season approaches, Bishop Barbarito has asked us to join him in a united prayer effort throughout the Diocese for our protection from potential storms. The following is a suggested prayer all families can pray at home:
God our Father, Creator of the Universe and Lord over all creation, we humbly stand before you as your children and ask that you keep us safe from all hurricanes which may threaten us. Protect us from all fear and anxiety of storms and give us an ardent trust and hope in Your love and mercy. You alone have the power to command the sea, the wind and the rain. You alone bring peace, calm, and safety. Father, we thank You in advance, for You are our only refuge. We ask this through Christ Your Son, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen. Mary, Queen of the Apostles, and Patroness of our Diocese, pray for us.

LIVE THE EXPERIENCE WITH FELLOW PARISHIONERS
Father Richard’s Return from Medugorje Sparks Interest in Pilgrimage for Parishioners
As many of you know Father Richard has recently returned from an awe-inspiring tour of Medugorje. Father has spoken glowingly of his trip and many parishioners have expressed an interest in taking part in a spiritual pilgrimage that has now been scheduled. Our Lady calls us to a closer relationship with her son, Jesus Christ. Plan to join us and one or more of our priests in a pilgrimage, a physical journey through which we seek to strengthen and renew our personal relationship with God.
The planned date of departure is April 25, 2009 with a return on May 3rd. Package price is $1.870.00. Registration deadline is February 16, 2009. Space is limited. For more detailed information, or to obtain a brochure and registration, please call Harry Fear in the Development Office at 561-392-8172, x13.
Father Richard will be speaking about his recent pilgrimage and showing a film on December 5, 2008. Everyone is invited and there is no charge. Details of this event will be announced in the near future.
FOOD PANTRY RUNNING ON EMPTY AGAIN
Business in our Wednesday food pantry has been good. Unfortunately, too good. Our shelves are nearly depleted once again. Your last response was overwhelming. Can we call on you once more? Canned food and dry goods are needed or cash donations are welcome too. Bags for your donation are available after Mass today outside of church. Return them during the week or next Sunday. Any questions, call Kevin Cleary at 561-392-8172, x22.
OUR PARISH MUSIC DIRECTOR
As most of you know, on Sunday afternoon, July 6th, our beautiful and beloved soprano soloist, Joanne Bayarri passed away suddenly at the Boca Raton Community Hospital. She will be missed by all in the parish as she so willingly shared her God given talents to help us in our prayer. She literally sang at hundreds of liturgical and sacramental celebrations in her 13 years as a member of the St. Jude music ministry. Her artistry, humility, deep faith and loving nature will always be remembered.
Her family has asked us to form the Joanne Bayarri Memorial Music Ministry Fund. If you would like to make a gift in remembrance of Joanne please bring or mail your contribution to the parish office, attention: Rosemary Stone, and I will be sure that her family is notified of your gift.
