How To Make Effective Deathbed Transfers?
Many people want to leave assets or a remembrance at their death to
grandchildren, other relatives, friends and organizations, i.e. schools
and churches. But, giving assets during life instead may result in more
of the donor’s wealth passing to beneficiaries and less going to the
government as tax. Unfortunately, many people don’t realize this until
they are on their deathbeds, and transfers at that time require special
planning.
WHY MAKE GIFTS?
Donors may have many reasons for not making gifts until after death.
They may not want to lose control or possession of assets until they
are certain they won’t need them. Or perhaps they simply have
never considered lifetime gifts as alternatives.
But, when a donor is not expected to live long, he or she may, for
the first time, take seriously the prospect that estate tax will erode
assets. Lifetime gifts can cut down on erosion by removing the assets
from the donor’s taxable estate. In 2004, a donor can give up to
$11,000 per
recipient per year free of gift taxes. It may be too late for donors on
their deathbeds to implement other estate reduction strategies, but
they can still take advantage of these annual exclusion gifts.

What are matching gifts?
More than 100 parent companies and corporate foundations in
the
United States currently match their employees’ gifts to non-profit
organizations such as St. Jude School or other community organizations.
Here is how it works. Under a corporate matching gift program, gifts
made by a company’s eligible employees to the non-profit organization
that meet the company’s guidelines are matched with company or
corporate foundation funds. Generally to initiate a matching gift a
donor completes the company’s matching gift form and sends it along
with his or her donation to the recipient non-profit organization (in
this case, The Development Office, St. Jude School). We then complete
the form certifying that we have received the employees’ gift and that
we are eligible to receive matching gifts under the company’s
guidelines. We then forward the form to the company. After the company
verifies the eligibility of the donor and the recipient organization
(St. Jude School) the company sends a check to St. Jude.
If you are not sure your company has a Matching Gift program,
ask
your Human Resources Department. If you need more information from our
school, call Harry Fear at our Development Office, 561-392-8172 ext.
13.
The following firms have recently
participated in
the Matching Gift Program at St. Jude:
Allstate, American Express, General Tire,
IBM,
